After 25 years of legal practice, including over a decade as a partner at my firm, the last thing I expected was to become part of one of the largest law firm launches in U.S. history. Yet, here I am.
As my coaching business continued to expand and thrive, my legal practice had found a comfortable rhythm in managing existing clients. Becoming one of 130+ founding partners of a new law firm wasn’t exactly something I wanted or was confident was the right move for me. The transition would entail significant changes, requiring me to learn and adopt new systems, approaches and processes. Did I really want to do all this at this point in my career?
As I thought more about the situation, I asked myself, how would I advise my clients in a similar position?
My coaching is based on the philosophy that a career is a journey, not a destination. But was I truly practicing what I preached? Was I reluctant to start this new journey because I believed I had already reached my ultimate destination? Was it my age, or maybe just complacency?
It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking of one's current position as the ultimate destination, especially after years of hard work and success. However, regardless of where you find yourself in the journey or how long you’ve been at it, true personal and professional growth never stops, and it often involves stepping outside of one's comfort zone and embracing change. Applying this to my own situation, I realized that this opportunity was a chance for me to practice the principles I advocate for my clients – to view my career not as a static endpoint but as a dynamic, evolving journey.
Ultimately, I decided to seize the opportunity. The new firm was an ideal fit for me with the right people and its emphasis on culture, diversity, equity, inclusion and professionalism – all the values I hold dear. I recognized it was time to challenge myself, learn new things and contribute to the creation of something remarkable. My journey is far from over.
