What do you want?

This seemingly simple question stumps a lot of Asian women that I speak with. Too often, they find themselves caught between:

• What should I want?

• What can I want?

It’s possible that we’ve become so good at prioritizing others’ expectations and practicality over our own desires that we genuinely don’t know what we want or are afraid to admit it.

And yet, many of us continue to dedicate so much of ourselves to work, sometimes at the expense of our own well-being and the happiness of those we love. But why? Shouldn’t the hard work and sacrifices be in alignment with our dreams?

Knowing what we truly desire is empowering. It allows us to make intentional decisions that are in harmony with our values. Regardless of whether our desires match what we think we should want or what seems possible and realistic, the act of acknowledging such desires takes us one step closer to owning our career journey.

Perhaps we are already on our path toward our desires without even realizing it. If so, recognizing and embracing our aspirations will bring greater focus and motivation to our current efforts. On the other hand, if our desires lie elsewhere, maybe it’s time to figure out how to align our actions with them or acknowledge that we have other priorities and values that guide our choices.

So, ask yourself today – What do you want?
